TCMS-Tools

The Transition to College Mathematics and Statistics text, by design, incorporates the Common Core State Standards Mathematical Practices into each lesson. To support students in developing proficiency with the CCSS Mathematical Practice: use appropriate tools strategically, we have developed TCMS-Tools public-domain software that provides access to technology tools for use in both school and at home.

TCMS-Tools is a suite of both general purpose tools and custom apps designed to support student investigation and problem solving in the TCMS text.

(Click the screen above to download the free software.)

TCMS-Tools requires that Java software be installed on a Windows, Mac, or Linux PC prior to running. The free download can be obtained at www.java.com. (Cell phones and most tablets do not support Java in a way that will allow TCMS-Tools to run. NOTE: Mac users may need to hold Control to Open TCMS-Tools for the first time.)

Design Features

  • The software toolkit was developed from the ground up with specific curriculum applications in mind and then embedded in a ready-to-use manner into the curriculum.

  • Tools were developed for each major branch of mathematics. (See the information at the right.)

  • Tools share similar menu screens and interface promoting learning transfer from one tool to another.

  • Tools are built using Java WebStart, which permits safe, easy, and reliable distribution of software and software updates across different types of computers.

  • TCMS-Tools is available under a Gnu-public license.

  • View the Web-based TCMS-Tools HELP system. (Updated 8.08.14)

  • Have a question about or problem with the software? Email prof.brin.keller@gmail.com for assistance and troubleshooting.

Algebra tools include an electronic spreadsheet and a computer algebra system (CAS) that produces tables and graphs of functions (2D and 3D), manipulates algebraic expressions, and solves equations and inequalities, and includes a custom app for solving linear systems.

Geometry tools include an interactive drawing tool for constructing, measuring, manipulating, and transforming geometric figures in a coordinate or coordinate-free environment and in 2D or 3D, and a set of custom apps for studying contour diagrams, cross sections of various space shapes, surfaces of revolution, and graphical linear programming.

Statistics tools include tools for graphic display and analysis of univariate and bivariate data, simulation of probabilistic situations, mathematical modeling of quantitative relationships, and a custom app for analyzing binomial distributions.

Software includes preloaded data sets appearing in the student text.
